Coos Bay Area Habitat for Humanity is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with people in need to build safe, decent housing. Volunteers provide most of the labor, and individual and corporate donors provide money and materials to build Habitat houses. Partner families themselves invest hundreds of hours of labor – “sweat equity” – into building their homes and the homes of others. The houses are then sold with a none interest bearing mortgage to those families. We provide a “hand-up, not a handout”.

Twenty families… 28 adults and 55 children… have been given a hand-up, out of substandard housing, through Coos Bay Area Habitat for Humanity. This is NOT a giveaway program; the families not only invest hundreds of hours of labor (sweat equity) into the building of their houses, their monthly mortgage payments go into a fund to build more houses. Plus, their property taxes help support local government and schools.

Research shows that children raised by families who own their homes do better in school. Break the cycle of substandard housing and help us help others.
